World War II
With familiar foods short supply the government came up with some imaginative suggestions for substitute ingredients in recipes. This wartime recipe shows you how to make an apricot flan............without any apricots!
During World War 2 food was rationed. Lots of people grew their own fruit and vegetables in their gardens. We decided to have a go ourselves and grow some in our garden, keep watch here of how well we do!
Some people did not have an Anderson Shelter in their gardens and instead they had Morrison Shelters indoors. This was usually made under the kitchen table and if the Air Raid warning sound went off you would dive under the table to keep safe. Class 2 made their own Morrison Shelter, take a look at the pictures to see who is taking shelter!
Posters were very popular during World War 2 to promote a 'no waste' society. These posters had popular and catchy slogans such as 'Make do and Mend' and 'Hitler will send no warning, so always carry your Gas Masks'
We were lucky enough to have some visitors who came in to talk to us about their experiences of World War 2, they were only children when the war started and it was really interesting to have some of our questions answered.
Class 1 made some models of how a house during the war and the gardens would look. We have Anderson Shelters in the gardens and vegetable patches.
At the end of term we celebrated with a World War II party, we dug up up the delicious vegetables we have been growing in our allotment and made lots of yummy food from war time recipes and decorated the playground with bunting. We played games that would have been played by the children celebrating the end of the war. one of our old pupils even came back to visit and join in the fun and games.
Take a look below at some more work we have been doing about
